Cyprus Ready to Assume Armenia's Advocate Role in the European Union

On May 16, the Speaker of the National Assembly of Armenia, Alen Simonyan, received the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus, Kyriakos Giorgalis. The Speaker highly appreciated the inter-state and multi-faceted relations that have developed between Armenia and Cyprus in recent years. He expressed gratitude to his counterparts in the House of Representatives of Cyprus for the unanimous adoption of the resolution on April 6, 2023, regarding the continuous aggression of Azerbaijan against the Armenians and the current situation in Nagorno-Karabakh, as reported by the official website of the National Assembly of Armenia.

The role of the cooperation committees operating in both parliaments was emphasized during the meeting, underlining the recent visit of the delegation led by Haik Konjoryan, the head of the Armenia-Cyprus Interparliamentary Committee, to Cyprus. The close and effective cooperation and mutual support between delegations of friendly countries within various international organizations' parliamentary assemblies were also highly valued.

“One thought has stuck with me from my official visit to Cyprus, when my colleagues said that Cyprus is ready to assume the role of Armenia's advocate in the European Union,” noted Alen Simonyan, adding that Armenia is also prepared to support Cyprus.

The meeting addressed the government's decision to open a diplomatic representation of Armenia in Cyprus during 2023. In this context, the Speaker expressed hope that, based on the principle of reciprocity, Cyprus would also open a representation in Armenia.

At the end of the meeting, the Speaker of the National Assembly conveyed greetings to the President of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus, Anita Demetriou, expressing hope that she would soon be hosted in Armenia.
