Biden Administration to Address Iran in Senate Briefing
Representatives of U.S. President Joe Biden's administration will hold a briefing for senators regarding Iran on Tuesday, according to Politico, citing congressional staff and several officials.
The briefing is scheduled to take place on Capitol Hill on May 16 at 4:00 PM (12:00 AM Yerevan time).
The publication notes that attendees will include Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman, Deputy Secretary of Defense Colin Kahl, Deputy Director of National Intelligence Morgan Muir, Under Secretary of Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Brian Nelson, and the Chief of Strategy, Policy, and Plans for the U.S. Armed Forces Joint Staff, Vice Admiral Stephen Koehler. Instead of the special envoy for Iran, Robert Malley, his deputy, Abram Paley, will participate in the briefing.
Sherman will inform senators about the progress of negotiations surrounding the Iran deal. Other topics likely to be raised during the briefing include Iran's overarching threats to the U.S. and its regional partners, particularly Israel, as well as Tehran's support for terrorism.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who requested a briefing on Iran several months ago, asserted that the threat from Iran has intensified under President Joe Biden.
A Republican aide in the Senate stated that the briefing is "overdue."
