VIDEO: Migrants Attempt to Breach Police Barrier at US-Mexico Border

Thousands of migrants, who have been waiting for several days at the US-Mexico border for the lifting of immigration restrictions due to the coronavirus, known as “Title 42,” are left without food and water, ignoring the harsh warnings of the new regulations - “Title 8” - which state that they could face deportation and detention, as they attempt to breach a police barrier. Corresponding footage has spread online.

“Our borders are not open,” said US Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas yesterday. He emphasized that the new changes have more severe consequences for those crossing the border, even for asylum seekers.

“If someone arrives at our southern border after midnight today, they will be considered ineligible for asylum and will face more serious consequences for illegal entry, including at least a five-year entry ban and possible criminal prosecution,” he stated.

Previously, “Title 42” was extended until midnight on May 11. The new regulations will come into effect on May 12 at 00:00 local time.

It is noteworthy that the Biden administration has introduced a new asylum regulation. Now, there will be more opportunities to obtain protection, but only if the migrant crossed the border legally. Otherwise, their asylum request will be denied, and they will be barred from entering the country for five years.

A record number of migrants have been detained at the US-Mexico border in one day, exceeding 10,000. Authorities and residents are concerned that the situation will worsen.
