Italy Reports Time Required to Completely Halt Russian Gas Supplies
The CEO of the Italian energy company Eni, Claudio Descalzi, is confident that Italy will need at least two years to completely abandon the supply of Russian gas. His remarks were quoted by the newspaper La Stampa.
“At this moment, the substitution of Russian gas is partial; it will take two years to fully replace it,” he stated.
He added that currently Italy has substituted 30 billion cubic meters of the 40 billion cubic meters it relies on.
Descalzi noted that this process is complicated, as domestic production has not been stimulated over the past eight years, resulting in the country losing its own gas output.
According to Descalzi, the rapid replacement of Russian gas has been facilitated by Italy's historical ties with Egypt, Angola, Algeria, the Republic of the Congo, Mozambique, and Libya, where the company has maintained its presence, “producing 70% for the local market.”
