The Party Ensuring the Viability of the Peace Agreement Must Exist: Khandanian
Armenia sees a need for mechanisms that can ensure the viability of a possible peace agreement with Azerbaijan. This could take the form of guarantees from international organizations or countries. This was stated by the Chairman of the National Assembly's Foreign Relations Committee, Sargis Khandanian.
"I do not think it is possible to speak about the signing of a document as a result of these negotiations. However, we must wait for the completion of the negotiations," said Khandanian.
The negotiations are focused on the text of the peace agreement. As long as the discussions have not concluded, Khandanian considers it premature to talk about their outcomes. He emphasized that Armenia's overall goal is to achieve comprehensive peace in the region, to normalize relations with Azerbaijan, and to address the rights and security of the Artsakh Armenians. Khandanian assumes that all these topics are on the negotiating table.
"Representatives of the Armenian government, including the Prime Minister and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, have conveyed that in order for a peace agreement to be viable and to genuinely ensure peace, there must be certain mechanisms that guarantee the viability of that agreement. Armenia and Azerbaijan must negotiate, and if they reach mutual agreement, it will happen. We envision that this could involve, for example, the active involvement of the international community, whether in the form of international organizations or countries providing guarantees," stated Khandanian.
