I Will Be Very Happy: Pashinyan on the Signing of a Peace Treaty Between Armenia and Azerbaijan
During the question-and-answer session between the National Assembly and the Government held on May 3, Gegham Manukyan, a member of the ‘Armenia’ faction, asked Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan if the trilateral meeting among Blinken, Bayramov, and Mirzoyan is held on the same platform as the Lavrov, Bayramov, and Mirzoyan meeting format, whether the same issues are being discussed there, and inquired about who decided that Ruben Rubinyan should travel to Washington.
In response to the MP's question, Nikol Pashinyan stated that discussions in Washington are focusing on what he has already presented to the National Assembly. “There is a document of proposals for an Armenia-Azerbaijan peace treaty on the table. I have instructed the Foreign Ministry to familiarize you with that document—both the Azerbaijani and Armenian proposals, which you did not want,” emphasized the Prime Minister.
Pashinyan also informed that Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Ruben Rubinyan went to Washington on his political decision. The opposition MP further asked whether it is possible to sign a peace treaty between Azerbaijan and Armenia on June 1 in Chisinau based on the document discussed in Washington, following the format of the meeting held in Prague.
“If that is the case, I will be very happy. That is not bad but good news. Since negotiations are ongoing, any positive or negative commentary I make will affect their course. I have told the officials who went to Washington: negotiate freely within the framework of our publicly expressed opinions. I have emphasized: know that I will sign the document you negotiate with Azerbaijan,” the Prime Minister stated.
Pashinyan also touched on the issue of Artsakh, stating that as long as there are no fixed points in the Armenia-Azerbaijan peace treaty, he cannot answer the question regarding the status of Artsakh. “When the negotiations with Azerbaijan are finalized, the text is ready, and I declare that I am going to sign the peace treaty, then I will be able to provide a clear answer regarding the negotiated options for Artsakh,” said the Prime Minister.
