More Than 70 Protests to Take Place Across Spain
More than 70 protests demanding wage increases will be held in Spain as part of traditional May Day demonstrations.
The UGT union has called on people to participate in these 70 protests scheduled across the country on May 1, International Workers' Day. According to a tweet from the General Union of Workers (UGT), the focus this year is on the need for wage increases to alleviate the loss of purchasing power amidst the inflation crisis, which they link to "excessive corporate profits."
“We need a decent salary that rises in line with inflation to guarantee purchasing power. For this, a decision on wage guarantees is essential,” states the joint manifesto of the unions.
While the primary demands relate to wages and the resumption of negotiations with the employers' CEOE association, the unions also present several other requests. For example, they urge the government to redistribute income to support needy families.
The protest in Madrid will take place from the Gran Vía central street to the Plaza de España, with the participation of Second Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Employment Yolanda Díaz and Finance Minister María Montero.
