The Arrest of Yerevan's Deputy Mayor Gevorg Simonyan Has Been Revoked
The arrest of Yerevan's Deputy Mayor and former Deputy Minister of Health Gevorg Simonyan has been revoked, as the court found that the threshold of fundamental suspicion required for detention was not met. This information was shared by Levon Sardarayan, the head of the Yerevan Municipality's Information Department, via a post on Facebook.
Earlier, the Anti-Corruption Committee issued a statement indicating that Gevorg Simonyan, who served as Deputy Minister of Health from 2020 to 2022 and was responsible for the allocation of state funding, failed to exercise adequate oversight due to a cronyism connection with the director of the Medline clinic. As a result, Babken Shahumyan misappropriated approximately 120 million drams.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, 11 individuals were arrested in connection with various abuses, including Deputy Mayor Gevorg Simonyan. Initially, the court had granted the investigator's request to detain Gevorg Simonyan.
