Macron Sends Letter to Armenian President

French President Emmanuel Macron has sent a letter to Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan on the occasion of the 108th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, in which he stated:

“On April 24th, France commemorates the 108th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide of 1915. France remembers the men, women, and children who were killed or died from starvation or exhaustion during the paths of deportation. France, alongside you, remembers the Armenian fighters who resisted at Musa Dagh in September 1915 and were aided by our sailors. France, which condemned the massacres of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire through the voices of Georges Clemenceau, Anatole France, and Jean Jaurès, stands with you today to defend the memory of the victims, to fight against denialism, and to draw serious lessons from that tragic chapter of history.

Even today, when the European continent mourns due to horrific aggression, France continues its fight for memory and against oblivion. During France's presidency in the Council of the European Union, we completed the draft law on digital services in 2022, so that genocide would no longer go unpunished. France remains permanently vigilant in its territory. In 2019, I established a day of commemoration for the Armenian Genocide in the Republic’s calendar, as I want every French citizen to remember that day. This struggle for justice and historical truth belongs to the Armenians, but also to all of France since the respect for human rights is at the core of the fraternity of the French Republic. The remembrance of the genocide also reminds us of the place of Armenians in our history, as many survivors from this tragedy joined our country, contributing to its prosperity and strengthening its influence.

On this day of commemoration, which also symbolizes the renaissance of the Armenian people, I wish to reaffirm France’s support for the democratic reforms taking place in Armenia, as well as for the processes of building peace in the region.
