Azerbaijani Officials Propose Residents of Nagorno-Karabakh to Obtain Azerbaijani Passports
The Chairman of the Standing Committee on European Integration of the National Assembly of Armenia, Arman Yeghoyan, and the Vice-Chairwoman of the Committee, Mery Galstyan, received Lucas Furlas, a Member of the European Parliament and the President of the Armenia Friendship Group, on April 25, as reported by the official website of the Armenian National Assembly.
This was the first visit to Armenia for the Member of Parliament, who went to the Syunik Province to observe the construction of illegal checkpoints by Azerbaijan in the Lachin corridor and the official blocking of the corridor.
Arman Yeghoyan noted that Azerbaijan's actions aim to carry out ethnic cleansing in Nagorno-Karabakh and to completely ethnically cleanse the region of Armenians. He also informed his European counterpart that Azerbaijani officials are publicly proposing that the residents of Nagorno-Karabakh obtain Azerbaijani passports.
The interlocutors deemed it urgent to raise this issue in the European Parliament. The Members of Parliament also discussed matters related to Armenia-EU cooperation, emphasizing the implementation of joint recovery programs in border communities.
At the end of the meeting, the parties also spoke about issues related to Armenian-Cypriot friendship and overcoming challenges faced by both peoples.
