Armenian Athletes Win Small Silver and Bronze Medals at Weightlifting European Championship
Varazdat Lalayan won a small silver medal, while Simon Martirosyan secured a small bronze medal in the clean and jerk event of the European Weightlifting Championship for super heavyweight categories.
The clean and jerk competition for men's super heavyweight took place at the Karen Demirchyan Sports and Concert Complex in Yerevan.
In the +109 kg weight category, the main favorite, double Olympic champion, six-time world and European champion Lasha Talakhadze from Georgia, led the competition with a result of 222 kg in the clean and jerk.
World silver medalist and European bronze medalist Varazdat Lalayan finished second with a result of 212 kg.
Simon Martirosyan achieved a third-place result with 195 kg.
Varazdat Lalayan managed to lift 205 kg in his first attempt. He successfully lifted 212 kg in his second attempt but failed at 218 kg in his third attempt. Simon Martirosyan succeeded in his first two attempts, lifting 190 kg and then 195 kg. He attempted 200 kg for his third lift, but failed.
After the clean and jerk event, four weightlifters withdrew from the competition. At the start of the event, Enzo Kofi Kuvoorgen from the Netherlands and Tamas Kajoc from Serbia withdrew. Athletes from Israel and the Czech Republic recorded zero lifts.
