Video: Two Tons of Drugs Discovered Near the Coast of Sicily
The Italian Financial Guard has discovered a significant consignment of drugs weighing nearly two tons, floating in the sea off the eastern coast of Sicily.
According to the law enforcement agency, the total value of this 'catch' in the drug market is estimated to be around 400 million euros. The seized cargo is among the largest on a national scale.
The marine units of the Financial Guard reported that they identified multiple floating packages secured with a net and equipped with a light signaling device.
The preliminary inspection allowed officials to conclude that the packages were made with special care, likely to prevent water from entering them and to avoid sinking.
According to initial theories, the cargo was abandoned at sea by drug traffickers' vessel, to be later transported by land. A total of 1,600 boxes of white powder were seized, packed inside 70 larger containers.
