VIDEO. New Footage. How the Bodyguard Saved the Life of Japan's Prime Minister
In the city of Wakayama, located in western Japan, an explosion occurred near the speech venue of Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. The explosion took place while Kishida was conversing with the candidate of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party and was preparing to deliver a speech at the Saigasaki fishing port.
According to media reports, an object resembling a smoke grenade was thrown from the crowd gathered near the speech venue. New footage has emerged showing how a security officer timely noticed the explosive device thrown by the assailant and pushed Kishida aside. After the explosion, clouds of smoke appeared at the scene.
Authorities have stated that there were no injuries from the incident. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida was evacuated from the scene. Later, he decided to proceed with three more planned street speeches. A 24-year-old suspect was arrested on the spot. According to footage from Japanese television, the explosion occurred immediately after the young man threw the smoke grenade, allegedly targeting the Prime Minister. The motives for his actions remain unknown.
It is worth recalling that in July 2022, former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was fatally wounded during his speech as part of the election campaign. He died in the hospital without regaining consciousness. Abe was 67 years old.
