Our Patience Has Limits: From Iran to Azerbaijan

Our Patience Has Limits: From Iran to Azerbaijan

“Iran is a large country that has historically held great respect for its neighbors. Iran shares many commonalities with its northwestern neighbor, particularly Azerbaijan, and we have always respected this country,” said Ali Nikzad, the Vice President of the Iranian Parliament, while discussing Iran-Azerbaijan relations. He added, “Azerbaijan must understand that one of Iran’s neighbors (Iraq) made a mistake after the Islamic Revolution, and despite significant support from various countries, it was unable to stand against Iran over 8 years. Thus, we advise the Azerbaijani state officials to uphold and respect the principle of fraternity.”

Nikzad, commenting on the attack on the Azerbaijani embassy, stated it was motivated by personal reasons and added, “Should we close the embassy or withdraw the diplomats if a blind person makes a mistake and talks about other things?” Following that incident, our president contacted the president of Azerbaijan, and the parliament speaker also sent a message expressing regret. I personally spoke with the second-in-command of the Baku embassy in Tehran. Iran has maintained its dignity thus far, so I advise the Azerbaijani government and parliament to reflect on history and demonstrate appropriate behavior.”

He noted that Azerbaijan has expelled four diplomats in recent days, and certainly, our Ministry of Foreign Affairs will take reciprocal action, but this behavior will not end well. Nikzad emphasized that Iran holds special respect for the people of Azerbaijan and, as an Iranian Muslim and a member of parliament, stressed that the peoples of Iran and Azerbaijan have many commonalities, but Azerbaijan must refrain from adventures.

“Iran has been patient up to now, but patience has its limits. We have no contradictions; the borders, authorities, and opinions of the two countries are clear, and each country has independence. However, Azerbaijanis should not forget history. If a Zionist group (as referred to in Iran) is also stationed in Azerbaijan, they will be unable to do anything. Our hearts ache for the people of Azerbaijan. We must develop our relations in peaceful conditions while preserving dignity and friendship, but Iran's patience also has its limits,” he said.
