EU Calls for Troops to Withdraw to 1991 Line along Armenian-Azerbaijani Border

The spokesperson for the EU foreign relations and security policy, Sabine Masralin, addressed the recent incidents near the village of Tegh in the Goris region, highlighting the events that transpired yesterday.

“The EU regrets the armed clashes that occurred in the Tegh region of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border yesterday, which led to casualties and injuries among Armenian and Azerbaijani servicemen. This incident once again underscores that in the absence of a demarcated border, it is essential to respect the line from 1991, and that the forces of both sides should withdraw from this line to safe distances to prevent similar incidents,” Masralin stated.

She emphasized that previous commitments must be respected, including those made in October 2022 in Prague regarding mutual recognition of territorial integrity in accordance with the 1991 Alma-Ata declaration. The EU also calls for the resumption of demarcation negotiations and is ready to support this process. We urge all parties to maintain restraint and resolve all disputes peacefully. The EU continues to support these efforts, including at the highest levels, with the presence of the EU mission in Armenia.”
