Prosecution Submits Motion to Strip Mher Sahakyan of Immunity
The Prosecutor General's Office has requested the National Assembly's permission to initiate public criminal proceedings against Mher Sahakyan, a member of the opposition 'Armenia' faction.
According to the Investigative Committee, during a closed working discussion involving MPs on March 31, Sahakyan made an 'unjustified remark' to Vladimir Vardanyan, a member of the 'Civil Contract' faction, for speaking in a loud tone. He then approached Vardanyan and struck him once on the left eyebrow with an object in his right hand, causing the government MP to fall.
A criminal investigation was launched regarding the incident, and Sahakyan was arrested shortly thereafter on the basis of reasonable suspicion of committing a crime. He was taken to the police station and was released from detention on April 3.
