Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokesman on Tehran-Baku Relations

Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman addressed the Tehran-Baku relations today. He noted that neighboring countries should focus on common interests and not allow others to create tensions in bilateral relations.

“Iran has always emphasized the importance of dialogue, but there are enemies who do not want brotherly and Muslim Iran and Azerbaijan to have friendly relations,” said Nasser Kanaani.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman highlighted that Tehran has sought to promote the de-escalation of tensions in bilateral relations through diplomatic methods, and upon Tehran's initiative, the foreign ministers of the two countries have had phone conversations that have been positive and constructive.

“Efforts are being made to control the atmosphere created in coordination with the Azerbaijani side, and for relations to return to normal. Iran’s position regarding the developments in the Caucasus has not changed,” added Kanaani.

Tehran positively assesses the recent phone conversation between the foreign ministers of Azerbaijan and Iran, Jeyhun Bayramov and Hossein Amir-Abdollahian.

It is noteworthy that on April 6, Azerbaijan's Foreign Ministry declared four employees of the Iranian embassy in Baku undesirable persons, and they were ordered to leave the country within 48 hours. On April 7, Baku media reported that the mentioned employees of the Iranian diplomatic mission had left Azerbaijani territory with their families.

Kanaani labeled the expulsion of Iranian diplomats as a hasty and ineffective step. Regarding media reports about a change in the Iranian ambassador to Baku, Kanaani stated that the rotation of diplomatic personnel is a common phenomenon.
