Creation of an Azerbaijani Settlement in Talish at the Expense of a Armenian Settlement

The monument monitoring website monumentwatch.org writes: "On March 18, 2023, in the occupied village of Talish in the Martakert region, the President of Azerbaijan announced the resettlement of 20 families of Azerbaijanis in the village. Ignoring the threats directed at Armenians in Aliyev's speech and the fact that the resettlement of Talish by Azerbaijanis violates the provisions of the trilateral statement signed on November 9, we would like to draw attention to a specific image.

Images circulated show that a small square has also been built on the main road entering the village, next to residential houses, which, judging by examples from other settlements occupied by Azerbaijanis, is likely a flag-raising area. By comparing satellite aerial photographs with the existing images, we can confirm that it was built on the site of a former residential house, at the expense of its ground-up demolition.

Talish is a native Armenian settlement with multi-layered Armenian culture. It is home to the Glkho or Horeka monastery, the fortress and residences of the Beglaryan princes, St. Astvatsatsin Church, and other monuments. The Horeka monastery consists of a church, a courtyard, a bell tower, rooms for monks on the western side, and a cemetery (late 13th century to early 14th century). Another important monument in the village of Talish, the princely residence, belonged to the ruler of the Gulistan region, Prince Beglaryan, and was built in the 18th century. The village also contains the St. Savior Church, built in the 19th century. The aforementioned monuments are surrounded by other samples of Armenian culture, indicating that the settlement has had a dense Armenian population at various times.
