Trump's Arrest Indicates Crisis of Liberalism, Says Zakharova

The arrest of former US President Donald Trump, who openly declared his intent to run in the next elections, underscores a crisis of liberal ideology in the United States. This was stated by Maria Zakharova, the official representative of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“This is what is referred to as the crisis of liberalism. And this is in a country where the system is declared to be absolutely free, where there is nothing to restrain the expression of human impulses and passions, and this idolized ending devours itself or denies itself,” Zakharova said during a broadcast on Radio Sputnik.

On April 4, Trump was charged with 34 counts of falsifying business documents related to payments made to two women, including adult film actress Stormy Daniels, allegedly aimed at silencing their claims about an affair. Trump has declared his innocence and has been released from Manhattan Criminal Court.

Trump’s attorney, Joe Tacopina, stated that the charges against his client are baseless. According to Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, Trump and his associates conspired in 2015 to suppress negative information prior to the US presidential elections. He added that under this scheme, Trump and others paid three people to conceal information that could have hindered his chances of winning the elections. For his part, Trump claimed that the US has witnessed “high-level election interference,” asserting that his prosecution is politically motivated and serves the interests of current President Joe Biden. Trump also added that America is “going to hell.”
