Russia Conducts Cargo Transportation to Turkey Through Abkhazia
Russia has commenced cargo transportation to Turkey via the territory of Abkhazia. The fact of transit through Georgian territory has been confirmed by Aliass Labakhua, the first deputy chairman of the Abkhazian customs committee.
“Recently, a train consisting of 62 containers arrived. This was the transportation of goods from the Russian Federation to Turkey. The train passed without delays,” stated the Abkhaz official in a conversation with reporters, adding that “this is not the first instance; there have been other transits as well, but with smaller cargoes.”
“According to the agreement between the leaderships of Abkhazia and Russia, the parties are to ensure the unhindered transit of goods through their territories,” Labakhua noted. Official Tbilisi has not yet commented on this information. The issue of cargo transportation via this railway route has been discussed for years, but Tbilisi opposed it citing the occupation of Georgian territories, including Abkhazia.
