UN Mandators Urge Azerbaijan to Immediately Restore Traffic Through the Lachin Corridor
On April 3, five UN special procedure mandate holders published a statement urging the Azerbaijani government to take immediate measures to restore unhindered traffic and safe movement through the Lachin Corridor. The UN human rights experts specifically noted that the Lachin Corridor is the only transport link connecting Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh and holds humanitarian significance.
The blockade of the corridor has disrupted the supply of food, medicine, fuel, and other essential goods for approximately 120,000 people living in Nagorno-Karabakh. The humanitarian situation has worsened due to periodic disruptions in gas supply, which have also affected the operation of medical facilities. Educational institutions have also suspended their activities.
According to UN experts, the prolonged blockade of the only road linking Nagorno-Karabakh with the outside world could lead to catastrophic humanitarian consequences for the population and violations of their rights.
