Azerbaijan Officially Requests Security for Their Athletes, Says Weightlifting Referee
Azerbaijan has officially confirmed its participation in the European Weightlifting Championship, which will be held in Yerevan. In an interview with Armenpress, international weightlifting referee Araik Alaverdyan stated that the Azerbaijani side has formally requested measures to ensure the safety of their athletes.
It was previously reported that five Azerbaijani weightlifters would compete in the championship in Yerevan. The Deputy Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of Armenia, Karen Giloyan, announced during a press conference that the safety of Azerbaijani athletes, like that of all other competitors, would be ensured if they ultimately decide to participate in the event.
The European Weightlifting Championship will take place at the Karen Demirchyan Sports Complex in Yerevan from April 15 to 23. This marks the first time in the history of independent Armenia that Yerevan will host such a large-scale competition. The championship is a qualifying event for the 33rd Summer Olympic Games in Paris. Over 500 athletes from approximately 40 countries are expected to participate, with the total number of delegations exceeding 1,000. The official opening ceremony of the championship will be held on April 14.
