We Expect Immediate Implementation of the Court's Decision Through Sanctions Against Azerbaijan, Simonian to Bundestag President
During a working visit to the Federal Republic of Germany, the delegation led by the President of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia, Alen Simonian, met with the President of the Bundestag, Bärbel Bas, on March 28. This information was reported by the official website of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia.
Following a private conversation between the parliamentary leaders, Alen Simonian and Bärbel Bas toured the Bundestag, after which an expanded meeting took place.
The meeting emphasized the stable development of friendly relations between the two countries and the deepening of inter-parliamentary cooperation, noting the importance of multi-layered parliamentary collaboration and the mutual visits of parliamentarians between the National Assembly and the Bundestag.
The President of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia noted that Armenia highly values the implementation of the Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement between the EU and Armenia and appreciates Germany's support in this regard.
Presenting the post-war situation and discussing the urgent need to address security issues in the region, the President of the National Assembly pointed out that devastating developments in the South Caucasus, particularly around Armenia and the Armenian-populated Nagorno-Karabakh, often escape public attention.
At the request of his Bundestag counterpart, Alen Simonian provided details regarding the crisis in the Lachin corridor, the threats faced by the 120,000 Armenians in blockade, and the humanitarian multi-layered issues.
He noted that Azerbaijan is continuing its ethnic cleansing policies and creating unbearable living conditions, pushing the local Armenian population toward forced displacement in full view of the international community.
The President of the National Assembly recalled that on February 22, the International Court of Justice in The Hague issued a legally binding order for urgent measures against Azerbaijan, obligating it to take all necessary measures to ensure the unhindered movement of persons, vehicles, and cargo through the Lachin corridor.
“We expect our German partners to take effective measures to ensure the immediate implementation of the Court's decision through the imposition of sanctions against Azerbaijan,” he emphasized.
He added that Armenia welcomes the efforts of the German side aimed at peace in the region, expressing gratitude to the German government for its support regarding the decision to deploy a long-term EU monitoring mission in Armenia.
The parties discussed the possibilities for active cooperation in parliamentarism, parliamentary diplomacy, and democracy.
Commenting on the prevailing unrest and threats to peace in the world, the parties affirmed the necessity of long-term peace.
The President of the Bundestag expressed gratitude for the comprehensive information regarding the region and for the direct and open discussion, noting that within his mandate, he is ready to make efforts to contribute to correcting the situation and strengthening democratic values.
He added that wars are a human evil and primarily distort lives, causing pain and suffering, which is unacceptable and reprehensible by civilized humanity.
At the end of the meeting, the President of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia invited his German counterpart for an official visit to Armenia.
