Sport Should Unite Nations and Serve the Cause of Peace, Says Armenian President

Sport should unite nations. Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan wrote on his Twitter page, referring to the football match between Armenia and Turkey that took place yesterday, March 25.

“Sport should unite nations, reconcile peoples, and serve the cause of peace,” wrote President Khachaturyan.

The national teams of Armenia and Turkey first met in Yerevan in September 2008. At that time, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan watched the game in the stadium alongside Turkish President Abdullah Gul. This marked the first visit of a Turkish leader to the Republic in its history. The Armenian team lost to the guests with a score of 0:2.

In October 2009, Serzh Sargsyan traveled to Turkey for the match in Bursa. Once again, the Armenian and Turkish teams met on the field, and once again the Turks won with a score of 2:0.

It is noteworthy that on March 28, the Armenian national team will hold a friendly match against the national team of Cyprus. The Armenian team competes in Group D, where its rivals include the teams of Croatia, Turkey, Wales, and Latvia.
