A Strong Armenia Will Have More Opportunities to Choose Its Partners and Allies: US State Department

The participation of Armenia in the 2021 Summit for Democracy indicates that the United States recognizes Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's commitment to democratic reforms, the State Department stated in response to questions from CivilNet. The questions were related to the Lachin corridor crisis, the ethnic cleansing in Artsakh, increased US engagement in Armenia, and the importance of democratic states supporting each other.

The section regarding democracy states the following:

“The US is committed to continuing its support for the Armenian people in building a future and following the path they chose in 2018 and demonstrated their commitment to in the 2021 parliamentary elections. Armenia's participation in the 2021 Summit for Democracy demonstrates that the US recognizes Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's commitment to democratic reforms. While there is much work to be done, the Prime Minister has shown his commitment to the reform process by fighting corruption in Armenia. We look forward to further discussions in this regard and other democratic reforms being implemented by Armenia ahead of the second Summit for Democracy, which will take place at the end of the month. Ultimately, a strong, democratic Armenia will have more opportunities to choose its partners and allies.”
