We Expect Effective Steps from Russia First to Prevent Humanitarian Disaster in Artsakh: Alen Simonian to Yuri Vorobyov

The President of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia, Alen Simonian, met with the Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, Yuri Vorobyov, on March 18. Vorobyov is in Armenia for the 36th session of the inter-parliamentary commission on cooperation between the National Assembly of Armenia and the Federal Assembly of Russia.

During the meeting, it was noted that holding sessions of the inter-parliamentary commission in various regions and cities of Armenia and Russia has become a good tradition, providing a unique opportunity to familiarize oneself with the regional capabilities and outline specific steps.

Active cooperation between the legislative bodies of Armenia and Russia was emphasized, and the importance of conducting sessions of inter-parliamentary and intergovernmental commissions was highlighted. “I hope that yesterday's meeting was effective and that the results will strengthen the strategic partnership and cooperation between Armenia and Russia,” said Alen Simonian, referring to the session held the previous day and the signing of a cooperation memorandum between Tavush region of Armenia and Krasnoyarsk Krai of the Russian Federation.

The meeting also addressed regional security and other mutual interests. Commenting on the actions of official Baku, the Speaker of the National Assembly noted: “In the context of the need to restore free movement via the Lachin corridor to prevent the risk of a humanitarian disaster hanging over the people of Nagorno-Karabakh, I want to specifically mention that we expect effective steps and targeted statements from our international partners, first and foremost from the Russian Federation, whose peacekeeping forces are stationed in Nagorno-Karabakh.”
