Syria Recognizes Russia’s New Borders with Adjacent Regions: Assad
Damascus recognizes Russia’s new borders with the territories that joined following referendums—Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia regions, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said in an interview with RIA Novosti.
“Of course, I say that these are Russian territories, and even if the war were not taking place, they have historically been Russian territories,” said the Syrian leader in response to a question about the recognition of Russia's new borders.
Assad reminded that Syria recognized these regions even before they joined Russia: “This issue has been clear to us from the beginning, and we do not waver in our position. Syria’s stance is clear and at the same time decisive; we are convinced of this issue—not only for the sake of friendship with Russia but also because these territories belong to Russia,” the Syrian president said.
This position, according to the state leader, is based on historical facts.
