Moldova Officially Changes State Language from 'Moldovan' to 'Romanian'
The Parliament of Moldova has officially declared Romanian as the state language, replacing Moldovan. This information has been reported by Russian media outlets.
The bill was proposed and approved through voting by the ruling party 'Action and Solidarity'. "The bill on the approval of certain provisions of the Constitutional Court has been accepted in the second reading with 58 votes in favor," announced Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu.
This document was proposed to align the legislation with a Constitutional Court decision from 2013, which stated that Moldova's Declaration of Independence takes precedence over the text of the Constitution. The language mentioned in this declaration is Romanian.
While Moldova's Constitution recognizes 'Moldovan' as the official state language, linguists generally consider it to be identical to Romanian.
Moreover, there is no subject titled 'Moldovan language' in Moldovan schools and universities. Instead, students learn 'Romanian'. However, the 'Moldovan language' subject remains in self-proclaimed 'Transnistria' educational institutions. Additionally, in this self-proclaimed republic, a Moldovan variant based on the Cyrillic script is used, in contrast to the rest of Moldova.
