European Parliament Calls on UEFA to Exclude Belarus from Euro 2024
A group of over 100 members of the European Parliament has urged UEFA to ban Belarus from participating in the 2024 UEFA European Championship, as reported by Associated Press on Wednesday.
"The values of UEFA, as well as the organization's reputation and image in democratic societies and the international community, are at risk," the lawmakers wrote in a letter addressed to UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin.
The letter states that Belarus should not participate in the tournament due to the state of human rights in the country.
Previously, all Belarusian teams were prohibited from hosting international football matches in their home venues, and they are now required to play in neutral countries and without fans. However, UEFA decided last year that the country could still participate in the qualifying draw, despite a request from host Germany to exclude it.
Belarus is scheduled to face Switzerland on March 25 in the first match of its qualification campaign, which will take place in Serbia. Also in the same group are Israel, Romania, Kosovo, and Andorra.
The Euro 2024 tournament will be held in Germany from June 14 to July 14, with 24 teams competing in the group stage.
