17 People Killed During New Year Celebrations in Iran; Over 700 Injured
During the New Year "Chaharshanbe Suri" festival celebrations in Iran, which involved bonfires and the use of pyrotechnics, the number of injured individuals has surpassed 700, with 17 confirmed dead, according to local Tasnim news agency citing doctors. Earlier reports had indicated 338 injuries and 15 fatalities.
As of Tuesday evening, the reported number of injured reached 714 across the country. More than 130 of the injured have been hospitalized, with eight individuals currently in intensive care, and some victims have suffered amputations.
Every year, Iranians celebrate "Chaharshanbe Suri," which, according to the Iranian calendar, falls on the eve of the last Wednesday of the year. Traditionally, people jump over fires, and pyrotechnics are used during the festivities. The New Year, known as Nowruz, occurs on March 21. Last year, over 1,500 people were reported injured during the celebrations.
