Sona Aghekyan Wins Court Case Against Hayk Marutyan
The Supreme Court has established that the statements made by former member of the Yerevan Council, Sona Aghekyan, during a press conference did not defame Hayk Marutyan's honor and reputation. This was reported by Fidelis Law Firm.
“A victorious decision was made by the RA Supreme Court. The Fidelis Law Firm, represented by founding partner Varazdat Harutyunyan, director Vladimir Gabrielyan, and deputy director Luiza Hovhannisyan, has been defending Sona Aghekyan's rights against a lawsuit filed by former Yerevan Mayor Hayk Marutyan since 2019, which sought compensation for damages caused to his honor and dignity and demanded a retraction of statements.
Both the first instance and appellate court decisions were against our client. Following our application for a Supreme Court review, the Supreme Court overturned and amended the previous court decisions, restoring our client's right to freedom of speech.
As a result, the Supreme Court reasoned that the statements made by former member of the Yerevan Council, Sona Aghekyan, during the press conference were directed with a clear aim, specifically intended to inform the public about the situation in Yerevan, and the statements represented opinions, criticisms, and evaluative judgments directed at the mayor and city authorities. They did not defame Hayk Marutyan's honor and reputation,” the statement noted.
