Aliyev Expresses Concern Over the Operation of the Medzamor Nuclear Power Plant
On Thursday, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev received Rafael Grossi, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), where they discussed various issues, including the Medzamor nuclear power plant in Armenia and the associated risks for regional countries, Azerbaijani media report.
During the meeting, Aliyev emphasized that nuclear technologies should be used for peaceful purposes, highlighting the practical significance of the relationship between Azerbaijan and the IAEA in the fields of agriculture, medicine, and oil chemistry.
Regarding nuclear safety, Aliyev stated that the Medzamor nuclear power plant poses a significant danger to Azerbaijan, Turkey, Armenia, and the entire region. He informed Grossi that the plant utilizes outdated technologies, has serious technical problems, and expressed concern about the illicit trade of certain nuclear materials linked to the facility.
Both Aliyev and Grossi underscored the importance of all states adhering to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and voiced concerns that attempts to create nuclear weapons could pose serious threats to international peace and security.
