Two Trains Collide in Greece: 26 Dead, Over 80 Injured

In Greece, a collision between a passenger train and a freight train has resulted in the deaths of 26 people, with 85 others injured. Rescue operations are ongoing, as reported by ERT1, citing the official representative of the Greek fire service, Vasilis Vartakoyannis.

According to him, the condition of 25 of the injured is critical.

The accident occurred on the night of March 1 near the Evangelismos station, located more than 200 km northwest of Athens, in the vicinity of the city of Larissa. The passenger train, which was en route from Athens to Thessaloniki, had 350 people on board. The freight train was traveling from Thessaloniki to Athens.

The governor of Thessaly, Kostas Agorastos, stated that the first and second cars of the passenger train were completely destroyed. He mentioned that all passengers have been evacuated, and rescuers are currently searching only for the deceased.

Rescue operations involve 150 firefighters and 32 police officers. At the accident site, there are 40 ambulances and 15 patrol vehicles on standby, along with lifting vehicles for the evacuation efforts.
