Finland Begins Construction of Barrier on Border with Russia

Finland has commenced the construction of a barrier on its border with Russia. The work started at the Imatra border crossing, where tree cutting began on Monday.

The initial phase will involve the installation of a 3-kilometer-long trial section. According to Lenta.ru, the cost is estimated at 6 million euros. The main construction of the barrier is set to begin in March and must be completed by June.

It is known that the height of the barrier will be 3 meters, equipped with cameras, floodlights, and speakers.

In total, a barrier of 200 kilometers in length is planned. The overall length of the border between Russia and Finland is 1,300 kilometers.

Currently, earthworks are being carried out on site, and the construction plans also include road construction and the installation of security cameras.

The initiative is aimed at preventing illegal entry into Finland, as stated by the border guard service, emphasizing that the barrier is expected to last for 50 years. The initiative later received support from Prime Minister Sanna Marin.
