Scientists Warn of Threat of Major Earthquake in Israel

Since the beginning of February, six earthquakes have been recorded in Israel, but fortunately, all have been relatively mild. However, scientists warn that the dense series of aftershocks could be a sign of an imminent major earthquake that may occur within the next year. This information is reported by Channel 12.

Dr. Asaf Inbal, a seismologist from the Department of Geophysics at Tel Aviv University, believes that a powerful earthquake in Israel is just a matter of time. Dr. Inbal notes that the frequency of tremors in Israel has sharply increased following the devastating earthquake in Turkey and has yet to diminish.

“What does this tell us? I can’t say for sure, but small quakes do not prevent serious earthquakes. They do not emit enough energy to 'relieve' the entire burden that builds up on geological faults in our region,” said the professor.

According to the seismologist, there have been no similar earthquakes in Israel in recent decades. “There is a certain probability that a strong earthquake will occur. Perhaps the pace of these events will slow down, but a strong earthquake could happen within a year or more. It is impossible to make an accurate prediction,” the seismologist stated.

The expert also warned that the Dead Sea fault, where adjacent lithospheric plates have accumulated enough energy, could become the site of an extremely destructive earthquake.
