"We cannot sell our soul for gas or oil": Luxembourg's Foreign Minister

"We cannot sell our soul to have gas or oil," stated Luxembourg's Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn in response to a media inquiry.

The media outlet specifically asked, "Despite the criticisms from international human rights organizations, issues concerning human rights and democracy in Azerbaijan are not prioritized, if not excluded from the EU-Azerbaijan relations agenda. How do you think Europe can overcome the subordination of pan-European values to oil and gas interests, especially when there is credible information that a significant portion of resources sold to Europe will be sourced from a third country?"

The minister replied: "You know that since February 24 of last year, Europe has needed new energy sources from other parts of the world. I agree with you, we cannot sell our soul to have gas or oil. We must pay close attention to ensure that if we have no other routes or opportunities, we do not suddenly find ourselves dependent on parts of the world where human rights are not a priority."
