‘Fighting for you was foolish’: Azerbaijanis are outraged as the Varanda-Shushi highway will be toll
The Varanda-Shushi highway, under Azerbaijan's control, will become a toll road for citizens. This was announced by Saleh Mamedov, head of the State Agency of Automobile Roads of Azerbaijan.
“We anticipate a significant influx of foreign tourists to Shushi in the future. For that reason, we will make that road toll in order to collect funds for its maintenance,” Mamedov stated.
Azerbaijanis are expressing criticism of this decision on Telegram channels. Below are some of the comments from Azerbaijanis:
“At this rate, they’ll even make the air toll or set a fee for staying in Shushi. Thousands of boys died for this road, and now it’s going to be toll?” wrote one Azerbaijani user.
“Fighting for you was foolish,” said a participant in the aggression against Artsakh, addressing the people. “More than two years after ‘victory’, they not only have not settled in, but are also charging for travel.”
