Death Toll from Earthquake in Turkey Exceeds 38,000

The death toll from the powerful earthquake that struck Turkey has surpassed 38,000, according to the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD).

“The death toll from the major earthquakes that occurred in southern Turkey last week has reached 38,044,” Anadolu Agency quotes AFAD's statements.

Earlier reports indicated 35,418 casualties. Al-Jazeera reports that the death toll in Syria remains at 5,800, thus bringing the total number of earthquake victims in both countries to over 43,800.

According to the channel, another earthquake struck Hatay Province in southern Turkey on Friday night, measuring 5.1 in magnitude. On the night of February 6, a 7.7 magnitude earthquake occurred in Turkey, followed by a series of aftershocks, one of which measured 7.6.

These tremors have caused significant devastation and casualties in the country, as well as in neighboring Syria.
