Will Russia Open a Consulate in Syunik? 'Zhoghovurd'

'Zhoghovurd' newspaper reports that following the opening of the Iranian consulate in Kapan on October 21, 2022, the Russian Embassy in Armenia has expressed a similar desire. According to our information, there are discussions regarding the opening of a consulate in the Syunik region.

We learned that Russia has communicated its intentions to the authorities of the Republic of Armenia through various channels. Currently, there are discussions about how the authorities can prevent Russia, a strategic ally, from opening a consulate in Syunik after allowing Iran's consulate to open.

'Zhoghovurd' contacted the Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs for clarification on whether Russia has officially or unofficially applied to open a consulate in Syunik. In response, the MFA stated: 'The Republic of Armenia has not received an official proposal from the Russian Federation to open a consulate in the Syunik region.'

It should be noted that the emphasis is solely on the absence of an official proposal, and the MFA's response does not exclude the possibility of unofficial discussions. 'Zhoghovurd' was unable to obtain comments on this matter from the Russian Embassy in Armenia.
