According to Media Reports, a Member of the Yerevan City Council Robbed Russian Tourists in Gyumri
According to police reports, on February 3, several men from Gyumri robbed tourists, taking money, a phone, and the passports of a Russian citizen. The suspects have been arrested.
According to Haykakan Zhamanak, one of those arrested is Agasi Matevosyan, a member of the city council's ruling faction in Gyumri, along with his associates. Reports suggest that Agasi Matevosyan is a relative of former Deputy Prime Minister Hambartsum Matevosyan. This information has also been reported by Aravot.am and Hraparak.am.
The head of the ruling faction in the Gyumri city council, Knarik Harutyunyan, told Haykakan Zhamanak that she would refrain from making any premature judgments at this investigative stage since the issue is under the attention of law enforcement agencies, and she will avoid making any comments.
"The presumption of innocence is problematic not only for individual rights but also for the further course of the investigation," said Harutyunyan. In this case, she noted that it is impossible to initiate discussions regarding Agasi Matevosyan's membership. "My approach regarding the created situation is this: everyone is equal before the law, regardless of party affiliation and political views," the faction leader stated, suggesting they wait for police announcements.
It should be noted that earlier, the police reported that on February 3, at approximately 6:45 AM, a citizen, who had reported to the Akhuryan police station, stated that at around 3:00 AM, he and his girlfriend were near one of the restaurant complexes in Gyumri when a car with three individuals approached them and searched them. According to the man, they took his wallet and phone, and his girlfriend’s belongings as well.
