Video: Lavrov on the Document Signed by Armenia and Azerbaijan with the EU

When Armenia and Azerbaijan signed a document with the EU regarding their readiness to conclude a peace agreement based on the provisions outlined in the Alma-Ata declaration, it became somewhat challenging for us to decide on further steps. This was stated by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in an interview with television journalist Dmitry Kiselyov.

According to him, the declaration states that the borders between newly independent states will pass along the administrative borders of union republics. “And the Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Region was part of the Azerbaijan SSR. So, the situation here is multilayered,” Lavrov said.

He also added that the proposal to deploy a mission of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) at the Armenia-Azerbaijan border remains relevant. “The fact that the CSTO prepared a program for deploying peacekeeping operations in this difficult situation (at the Armenia-Azerbaijan border) is, I believe, a very important achievement. This proposal is still on the table. If our Armenian allies and friends are still interested in this as before, then this mission can be deployed in just one or two days,” Lavrov said.
