Former Director of Armenian Nuclear Power Plant Embezzles $1,027,470.90

G.M., who served as the General Director of the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant from 2002 to 2014, embezzled a significant amount of $1,027,470.90 (383,883,678 AMD) through misappropriation of funds entrusted to him. This information was reported by the Public Relations Department of the Prosecutor General's Office of Armenia.

The Investigation Department of the National Security Service obtained sufficient evidence indicating that G.M., abusing his official position, made a purchase in 2011 from the only participant in a tender, the Russian company Novenergoprom, for a price significantly higher than the market value—33,544,438.20 rubles—for 14 incomplete intermediate fuel rod sets. This was done without a request for a price offer from companies engaged in the production or sale of intermediate fuel rods and without the necessary purchase requests. Due to a lack of need, these fuel rods were never utilized and were stored in the central warehouse, thus expiring their operational shelf life.

In 2015, the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant was forced to purchase a complete set—37 intermediate fuel rods—from the company Rosatom Service for $592,000 (283,005,600 AMD).

On December 22, 2022, a decision was made at the initiative of the prosecutor to initiate a public prosecution against G.M. under the 3rd part of Article 256 of the Criminal Code of Armenia (misappropriation of entrusted property, particularly in large amounts). The same day, this decision was sent to the National Security Investigation Department for indictment. On January 31, 2023, charges were presented to G.M.
