January 28 is Armed Forces Day in Armenia: The Armenian Army Turns 31
Today is January 28, the proudest day on the Armenian calendar. This day stands out for its content and ideology. We celebrate a truly popular holiday based on the selflessness of freedom fighters, soldiers, and officers who fought and won brutal battles for the homeland and national dignity, honoring the memory of the fallen and the unity of society and the army.
The Armenian Army was born and forged alongside the establishment of our state. On December 5, 1991, the first Minister of Defense, Vazgen Sargsyan, was appointed by a decree of the President of the Republic, who was already a beloved commander of most volunteers, serving as the head of the parliamentary defense committee.
On January 28, 1992, the Government adopted the historic decision on the "Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Armenia," thereby legally announcing the creation of the Armenian National Army. The newly established ministry took control of the internal affairs ministry's police patrol unit, the special operations forces, the civil defense unit, and the republican military commissariat. Soon after, the central apparatus of the Ministry of Defense was established, including the General Staff, departments, and various divisions.
In May 1992, the Ministry of Defense began the first call-up within the territory of the republic, laying the foundation for a stable tradition of replenishing the army with conscripts.
Auroranews, congratulating the Armenian army on this day, primarily wishes for peace. We wish all soldiers a safe service, peace along Armenian borders, patience for the parents, and we, with a fluttering heart, await your return. We feel your strength behind us. Long live, for you are here! Happy holiday, Armenian army…
