Video: Arrest Made in Barracks Fire Case, Chief Prosecutor Announces
The Chief Prosecutor of Armenia, Anna Vardanyan, has announced that one person has been arrested in connection with the fire at a military barracks in the Gegharkunik region, which resulted in the deaths of 15 soldiers.
“Allow me not to disclose the sequence of individuals against whom these actions will be taken, citing the interests of the preliminary investigation. The Prosecutor's Office is conducting daily oversight at the level of the military prosecutor,” stated Vardanyan.
She noted that there are set deadlines for concluding the investigation, and the selection of preventive measures for specific individuals is being discussed: “There are strategic solutions in this regard.”
According to Vardanyan, military regulations are also being coordinated to understand who faltered in their duties during the incident. “On January 23, 2023, a directive was issued by the military prosecutor to the military prosecutors of all garrisons, requesting information on the living conditions and regulations related to the barracks of military units stationed in barracks moved as a result of military operations in 2020 and 2022,” she explained.
“Of course, fire safety services and work with hazardous materials are priorities, but all other security regulations, such as the furnishing of accommodations and issues like what ensures bed covers, whether there is a second exit to prevent a blockage, as we witnessed in this tragedy, are also on the list,” she added.
Vardanyan also mentioned that all hypotheses relating to the case are being investigated, but the main version remains as previously announced. “The main hypothesis, based on which the investigation is being carried out and for which we seem to have a base of evidence, is the version presented during the government session. However, I reiterate, we are investigating all hypotheses to avoid any doubts that we have not scrutinized anyone,” she said.
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan responded that no one is restricted or constrained by the version discussed during the government meeting. “What was stated was based on the information available at that moment. If it suddenly turns out that what was mentioned in the government session is 180 degrees different from the reality, we are not constrained by that,” he remarked.
