New Criminal Proceedings Initiated Over Barracks Fire in Gegharkunik

A new criminal proceeding has been initiated regarding the tragic fire incident at the barracks of an engineering troops unit located in the village of Azat in Gegharkunik Province. This was reported to Sputnik Armenia by Gor Abrahamyan, the spokesperson for the Investigative Committee of Armenia.

“The proceedings have been initiated due to the apparent negligence displayed by officials in complying with fire safety regulations, as well as their failure to perform the related functions,” Abrahamyan noted.

The new proceedings are based on Article 550, part 3 of the Criminal Code, concerning military official negligence that has caused a death through negligence. This article stipulates imprisonment for a term of five to ten years.

Abrahamyan informed that this case will be attached to the previous proceedings and will be conducted through a joint investigation. Within the framework of the new proceedings, around two dozen individuals have been interrogated. Currently, there are no accused individuals.
