Biden Calls on Congress to Pass Bill Banning Assault Weapons Sales

U.S. President Joe Biden has called on both chambers of Congress to approve a bill that prohibits the sale of assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, according to a statement released by the White House.

“Senator Dianne Feinstein, with whom I worked in 1994 against the last ban on assault weapons, has once again introduced legislation in the Senate to ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, as well as a bill to raise the minimum age,” he stated.

These efforts have received support from Senators Chris Murphy, Richard Blumenthal, and others. During the ten years of the Assault Weapons Ban, the number of mass shootings decreased. Following the Republicans' repeal of this law in 2004, which allowed the sale of weapons, the number of mass shootings tripled.

“I urge both chambers of Congress to act swiftly and send me this assault weapons ban for signature,” the President emphasized.

Biden noted that “the vast majority of the American people agree” with implementing such bans. He highlighted that since last June, “tragedy after tragedy has struck across America, including mass shootings from Colorado Springs to Monterey Park and everyday gun violence.”

According to the Gun Violence Archive, there have been 37 mass shootings recorded this year, resulting in 1,173 deaths and 2,063 injuries due to gunfire.
