Narek Avagyan, the Champion of Armenia's Youth Fencing Championship, Dies in Fire
A fire broke out in the barracks of the engineering battalion of the N military unit located in the village of Azat, Gegharkunik Province, resulting in the death of conscript soldier Narek Avagyan.
19-year-old Narek was from Noragavit. He was drafted into the army a year ago. He was engaged in fencing and had been accepted to the State Institute of Physical Culture and Sports of Armenia before joining the army.
Narek was the youngest child in his family and had one brother. He had participated in the military operations in September. This was reported to News.am by Alik Navasardyan, the senior coach of the Noragavit fencing sports school.
“He studied with us for ten years, participated in numerous competitions, and won many awards. He was the champion of the Armenia Youth Fencing Championship and an international prizewinner. Narek can be said to have grown up under our guidance; he was a very modest, disciplined, and intelligent student. We were preparing to apply to the relevant authorities to allow Narek to participate in the Fencing World Championship, and this tragic incident occurred,” said Alik Navasardyan.
