Dutch Parliament Calls for Pressure on Azerbaijan

The Dutch Parliament has adopted a resolution regarding the blockade of the Lachin corridor by Azerbaijan. The Parliament calls on the government and EU countries to exert pressure on Azerbaijan to unblock the Lachin corridor.

This was announced by the Federation of Dutch-Armenian Organizations (FAON). The FAON expresses satisfaction that today the Dutch Parliament has overwhelmingly adopted the resolution presented by the Christian Union faction concerning the blockade of the Lachin corridor by Azerbaijan.

“The resolution was presented by Mr. Don Seder (Christian Union party) during discussions on agenda items for the upcoming EU Council meeting. The resolution was also signed by Ms. Agnes Mulder (Christian Democratic Appeal party). The resolutions state that the blockade of the only road leading to Nagorno-Karabakh continues, worsening the humanitarian situation of the local population, while Azerbaijan continues to ignore calls to open the Lachin corridor. At the same time, Russian peacekeepers do not fulfill the conditions stipulated in the trilateral declaration between Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Russia,” the statement read.

The Federation of Dutch-Armenian Organizations (FAON), which submitted a petition to the Dutch Parliament on January 17 and held a three-day silent protest in front of the Parliament for the unblocking of the Lachin corridor, expects that the Dutch government and the EU will take serious and swift actions, particularly to unblock the road and put an end to the humanitarian disaster.

The FAON calls on the government, the EU, and the international community to take measures to stop the humanitarian disaster, which has left 120,000 people without gas in harsh mountain conditions, without food or medicine supplies, and with electricity restricted to only a few hours a day.

“International guarantees are needed to prevent a recurrence of such a situation. Azerbaijan’s actions have diminished the chances of establishing peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan. The EU hoped to achieve peace soon through its mediation and that of others. The FAON continues to hope that peace can only be achieved through negotiations,” the statement concluded.
