Sureniants: 'If we seek 'salvation' in this positive signal and use it as an alibi for our inaction, the consequences could be sad'

Political scientist Suren Sureniants writes: “There is a high likelihood that next Monday, during the meeting of foreign ministers from EU countries, a decision will be made to send a new observational mission to Armenia for at least two years. Of course, it is worth discussing the issue in detail once a final decision is made in Brussels. For now, I will limit myself to a few initial observations:

The role of such unarmed missions cannot be underestimated or overestimated. Armenia's security environment is in such a vulnerable state that even such a mission creates hopes for a certain degree of stability. On the other hand, if we seek ‘salvation’ in this type of mission and use it as an alibi for our inaction, the consequences could be sad, especially considering that almost all regional players—Azerbaijan, Turkey, Iran, and Russia—have a stake in the failure of this mission. It is important to assess the positive signal coming from Brussels without euphoria.”
