IAEA to Deploy Inspectors at All Nuclear Power Plants in Ukraine, Including Chernobyl

The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) plans to visit Ukraine next week to deploy international inspectors at all nuclear power plants in the war-affected country. This was reported by the Wall Street Journal.

Thus, the IAEA chief intends to significantly expand the regulator's presence at nuclear power plants amid a backdrop of attacks that have occurred over the past months and the threat of renewed Russian offensives.

According to Ukrainian officials and Western diplomats, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi plans to station two or three inspectors at the southern nuclear power plants in Rivne and Khmelnytskyi.

The power transmission lines of the last two plants were damaged as a result of missile strikes that occurred on November 15.

Inspectors will also be deployed to Chernobyl, the site of the world's worst nuclear disaster in 1986, which had been occupied for 36 days at the onset of the war and where hazardous radioactive materials are still being stored, officials said.
